Defar sets new two-mile record

Submitted by editor on 27 January 2008 - 1:27pm

Ethiopia's Olympic champion Meseret Defar added another record to her kitty with a World best of 9:10.50 for Two Miles at the 2008 Reebok Boston Indoor Games at the Boston's Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center.

Defar, who also holds the indoor 3000m World record of 8:23.72 and the outdoor World best at Two Miles, said afterwards she could have ran faster as she wasn't even running today at 100 percent yet.

Last year, Defar came very close to breaking the women's 3000m World Indoor record which she narrowly missed in 2006 running 8:30.94 to post the third-fastest time in history at the 2006 Reebok Boston Indoor Games in January.

Her time was bested only by Berhane Adere's four-year-old world record of 8:29.15 and Defar's own 8:30.05, also run at the same meet in 2005.

Dibaba sisters

Compatriot and World 10,000m champion Tirunesh Dibaba also posted a World season leading time of 8:33.37 for the women's 3000m, with her sister Ejegayehu Dibaba a distant second in 8:36.59.

Still just 22 years old, Dibaba, a three-time World Cross Country Champion, has been one of the brightest track-and-field stars in the world for the past four years.

In 2007, she defended her title as 10,000-meter World Champion with a dramatic come-from-behind victory while battling an injury. She is also the 2003 and 2005 World Champion and 2004 Olympic bronze medalist at 5000 meters.
