The reigning African Shot Put champion and record-holder Vivian Chukwuemeka will head the Nigerian athletics team to the 2008 summer Olympics Games in Beijing, China.

Chukwuemeka, who holds the African record of 18.43m set in Walnut, California in April 2003, will captain the 33 member team comprising 15 men and 18 women athletes plus 9 officials to the Games.

The 33-year-old told AthleticsAfrica.Com at the team camp in Abuja that her target for the summer is to improve on her African record and in the process break the 19m barrier.

Joining her on the team is the 2008 All Nigerian championships Jackpot and double champion, Damola Osayemi and the national high Jump record-holder, Doreen Amata.

Others in the team are Francisca Idoko, Gloria Kemasuode, Agnes Osazuwa, Halimat Ismaila, Kate Aregunmen (100m/4x100m), Folashade Abugan, Joy Eze, Ajoke Odumosu, and Oluoma Nwoke (400m/4x400m), Blessing Okagbare (long jump) and Chinonye Ohadugba (triple jump).

The 2007 All African Games Champion Toyin Augustus and Jessica Ohanaja will compete in the women's 100m hurdles

The men's team include the World Indoor 60m champion, Olusoji Fasuba, despite his injury scare at the trials, for the 100m and will be joined by new sensations Obinna Metu and Adetoyi Durotoye; and Uchenna Emedolu for the 4x100m relays.

The 400m and 4x400m team include: Godday James, Saul Weipogwa, Bola Lawal, Gbenga Awoleye, Victor Isaiah and Femi Ogunode.

Selim Nurudeen will be the sole entrant in the men's 110m high hurdles.
