Over $90,000 for grabs at Nedbank City of Cape Town marathon 2009

South Africa's top marathon runners can come away from the 3rd Nedbank City of Cape Town marathon with stacks of incentive money above the race prize money, should they achieve the set performance standards.

A total of R664,700 ($90,105) in incentives will be available to runners in the marathon in the 10km race.

Top of the pile is a massive R200,000 available to the top South African male runner, should he improve on the South African record of 2:06:33, while the winner of the women's race can earn a similar amount for breaking Elana Meyer's long standing SA record of 2:26:35.

The first male runner finishing under 2:10:00 will earn an incentive of R75,000, the second runner R50,000 and the third R30,000.

For a time under 2:11:00 the first male will receive R25,000, the second R15,000 and the third R10,000.

The first runner finishing under 2:12:00 will receive an incentive of R8000, the second R6000 and the third R 4000.

The first woman athlete to finish under 2:33:00 will earn an incentive of R75,000 the second runner R50,000 and the third R30,000.

For a time under 2:36:00 the first woman will qualify for R25,000, the second R15,000 and the third R10,000.

The first woman finishing under 2:39:00 will receive an incentive of R 8000, the second R6000 and the third R 4000.

In the 10km race the top male athlete under 28:00 will bag R10,000 in incentive money with the first runner under 28:30 getting R7000 and the first under 29:00 receiving R5000.

In the women's 10km race the first athlete under 32:00 will bag R10,000 in incentive money with the first runner under 32:30 getting R7000 and the first under 33:00 receiving R5000.

Record and time incentives are not cumulative, and only the top three local athletes in the marathon, and top three performers will receive time incentives, while regular prize monies are still payable in line with the various age categories recognised at the race.

Late entries for the Nedbank Cape Town Marathon and in the 10km will be taken at the City Hall in Darling Street on Friday, 25 September (10h00 - 17h00) and Saturday, 26 September (10h00 to 20h00).

The race will start at 06h30 on Sunday, 27 September.
