The Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) is considering the U.J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar, to host the National Mobil Championships scheduled for June to select athletes for the African Championships in July and the Commonwealth Games in October.

Last year, the 20th edition of the championship was held in Abuja and the AFN decided that the event would be taken round as many states of the federation as would be willing to host the event.

AFN President, Solomon Ogba, confirmed after a meeting with ExxonMobil officials on Tuesday, that Calabar was in the running for this year‘s event.

"We sent a three-man delegation led by Gloria Obajimi to Calabar and the report is encouraging" he said.

Obajimi said the tracks and facilities were in perfect condition.

"What thrills me about Calabar is that the grass is natural, not artificial. So we will not have any problem with field events" she said.

Cross River State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Raymond Obeten, said in Calabar on Monday that he was happy with the development.

He said, "I have been told of the AFN's interest and I want to assure them that there could be no better choice.

We are a state reputed for hospitality and service delivery. Add to that our experience in the organisation of big time events, even sports, and you will be rest assured that we will deliver."
