The World Athletics Day concluded over the weekend at Y.Y. Okot Girls' Secondary School in Kitgum climaxed by youth participants planting trees to kick start the Uganda Athletics Federation's (UAF) Green Project.

Kitgum LC 5 Chairman John Ogwok launched the tree planing project and kids athletics urging the youths specially in the schools system to embrace the Green Project exercise by jealously protecting the environment.

UAF initiated the Project to create awareness for re-afforstation in the country with 500 indigenous tree seedlings planted by the children in Kitgum Town, at the competition venue and surrounding counties, thanks to the National Forestry Authority offer.

According to a statement by UAF Publicity Secretary, Namayo Mawerere, the federation also introduced the Kids Athletics exhibition during the one-day competition in Kitgum which will later spread to educational institutions and member districts in the country.

The kids athletics involved children 7 to 12 years of age who competed in throwing, jumping and running events using equipment and distances specific to their age.

The World Athletics Day competition was organised for school and non-school going children with age categories ranging from 13 years to 17 years.
