AFN Golden League winners targets national trials

The four winners of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Golden League prize money has stated their resolve to continue their winning streak when they compete in the national athletics trials that will kick off in Calabar this week, 23rd to 25 June.

According to Baba Ibrahim who won the hammer event in the five venues of the event, the prize money came to him at the right time as he will continue his preparation with it so as to make it to the World Championship and the All African Games.

Baba said with is throwing so far; he will make the team to both games and said when he go out to represent the country, despite that he will be throwing against the best in the world and Africa, he will stand out tall.

"I am happy I am one of the winners of the prize money and believe me, this money came at the right time because I will use it to prepare myself for the championships we have this year."

Meanwhile, Shola Anota, who won the long jump with a 7.4m said he is not there yet as he has to contend with the national champion, Stanley Gbagbeke, who has 8m.

Anota said he will use the money to perfect his jumps during the national trials in Calabar, hoping he will qualify for the World Championships and All Africa Games and compete with the World best.

Justin Agu who won the 800m also talked about his plans for the money, he said he is going back to the drawing board with is coach so as to run a better time during the national trials in Calabar.

It would be pertinent to note that the four winners of the 2011 Athletics Federation of Nigeria Golden League where all from the Nigeria Security and Civil defense Corps (NSCDC).

They are Baba Ibrahim (Hammer), Shola Anota (Long jump), Justin Agu (800m) and the NSCDC 4x100m women team and they all shared the 2million that was at stake for the event.
