DAEGU2011 - Amantle Montsho wins Botswana’s first World Championships Gold
Amantle Montsho earned Botswana its first ever gold medal at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in the Women's 400m race in Daegu, South Korea on last night.
Montsho overcame a stellar field that included three-time 200m world champion, America's Allyson Felix in a time of 49.56seconds, 0.03sec ahead of her rival, with Russia's Anastasiya Kapachinskaya coming third in 50.24 seconds.
The Commonwealth Games champion also beat the defending champion Sanya Richards-Ross of the United States who finished seventh in 51.32.
"I'm so happy today to win my gold medal. I still can't believe it. I would like to thank all the athletes, those who made me run faster, especially Felix, because she has good speed so that made me run faster," said Montsho.
The 28-year-old sprinter added the world title to her other several titles in her list including the Commonwealth Games 400m title which she scooped in Delhi last year.
