Nigeria emerged the winner of the maiden edition of the ECOWAS U-23 Games which ended last Sunday at the mainbowl of the National Stadium, Abuja.

Nigeria topped the medals' table with 41 medals followed by Senegal with 10 medals, while Ghana finished third with 10 medals.

A major highlight of the athletics event was in the men’s 100 metres where Nigeria’s Ogho-Oghene Egwero won the gold with a personal best time of 10.10 seconds, with Burkina Faso sprinters Innocent Bologo (10.48) and Gerard Kobeane (10.50) taking home both the silver and bronze medals.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Patrick Ekeji expressed satisfaction with the organisation of the games and lauded all the athletes and officials who took part for making the Games a huge success.

Ekeji later handed over the flag of the Games to Ghana as next host billed for 2012.
